How to make money from your handicrafts is something millions of people worldwide are always interested in and want to know. According to Princeton University the word handicraft is a noun meaning a work produced by hand labor, or a craft that requires skillful hands. There are many people in the world that are blessed with skilled hands, and the desire to turn the fruit of their labors into hard cash. Handicrafts are something that is usually made at home rather then in an established workshop. Legally this is not defined as a sheltered workplace because it doesn't employ the handicapped.
Handicrafts defines a type of work where the products may be either useful or decorative that are made completely by hand or by using simple tools. The term is often given to products that are manufactured using traditional ways of manufacturing. One of the important ways that handicrafts are defined is by the individual touch given each piece rather then products that are manufactured using mass production. Handicraft products are often made that have some kind of cultural or religious meaning.
The term handicraft includes a wide variety of crafts including assembly, beadcraft, bone carving, cabinet making, chip carving, and a wide variety of other crafts ranging to zymurgy the craft of making alcoholic beverages using yeast in the manufacturing process. Although some people only make these handicraft objects for their own use; the majority make handicraft products for resale to others. It doesn't matter what the product is, someone is always looking for this product. The trick is finding them!
This trick is called "marketing," finding a place to sell your products. In itself marketing is a multi-billion dollar business used by everyone that has a product for sale. This ranges from the smallest manufacturing operation consisting of a single person to the largest multi-national corporations. Although they are closely related marketing differs from selling in it tells you where and how to sell, not the art of actual selling itself.
Like any other product on the market there are many avenues of marketing open to the handicrafter. One of the most simple of these is selling directly from your home by placing an ad in the local newspaper advising people what you have for sale and where they can find you. If you use this approach you had better check your local zoning laws or the P&Z officer is apt to close you down.
Another approach is to use online marketing such as the many auction sites that are now on the web. Using this approach you can either post the article with no or minimum price letting people bid whatever they think it is worth. The alternate method is to just post the price and let them buy it at that price. An alternate method is with a free-standing web page where the item is displayed for sale at a given price and a button placed next to it advising people to "buy now," or "add to shopping cart."
The local flea market operates usually every weekend with several dealers selling different products together in one place. Each dealer has a specific space they rent for the weekend. Many of these dealers are steady opening their booth every weekend. At a flea market you can display your wares and sell them for a fixed price. One of the biggest advantages of a flea market is the owner heavily advertises his location heavily in a local area. Very similar to a flea market is a crafts fair except they don't operate steadily, but rather are a more seasonal operation addressing specific seasons or holidays. This allows the handicrafter to make his wares fit a specific season.
As you grow larger you can hire sales reps that make their living selling your products as well as other handicrafters products. The sales rep usually sells to retail stores in his area of interest. He will charge a commission on the products he sells, but it is less then it would cost you if you were to do this job yourself.
